Affiliate Program

I’m wanting to start an affiliate program. Can you tell me the best way to start? Thanks, Bill.

Bill, starting an affiliate program isn’t really that hard, but it does require a marketing expertise. If your shopping cart doesn’t support an affiliate program, natively, then you can use services such as AffiliateClicks.com who offers affiliate management software on a monthly subscription rate. Commission Junction (cj.com), MyAffiliateProgram (myaffiliateprogram.com) and NetTraction.com offer affiliate tracking software and even offer fully managed services. If you don’t have the time or expertise in promoting your affiliate program you can use the fully managed recruiting and affiliate management services which can range as high as $10,000 per month

Dash v. Underscore

I’ve been told that I should use a dash instead of an underscore in my URL. Please explain. Thanks, Adam.

Adam, this is an age old question and one probably best left to answer by the search engine developers. Matt Cutts (AKA GoogleGuy) describes, in hisblog, that Google(tm) prefers dashes. What isn’t discussed in his dialogue is the fact that keywords in URLs are not as highly valued as keywords in the page title, Meta data and page content. To be on the safe side of things use dashes to separate words in your URL.
